Here we are, a brand new year. Happy New Year!

Let’s start the New Year out right and begin pruning. Below is a list that may help.

Many of us are confused about which plants should be pruned during which season. Here are plants you can prune right now, during the dormant season. These are plants that create flower buds on new wood; wood that will be made this spring.

Any questions, give me a shout. Happy pruning, Peter!

  • Fruit trees but wait until after Feb. 15 to prune stone fruits like peach.
  • All evergreen shrubs such as boxwood, holly, yews, junipers and the like. Junipers and yews are hardy enough to do now but we should wait until Feb. 15 to prune boxwood and holly.
  • Rose of Sharon can be done later in winter.
  • Crape myrtle can be done later in winter; in fact they can be done in early spring but before growth begins.
  • Summer blooming spirea such as Anthony Waterer.
  • Many viburnums
  • Barberry
  • Vitex
  • Cherry laurel
  • Red and Yellow twig dogwood, can be cut to the ground.
  • Butterfly bush should be cut to the ground.
  • Burning bush
  • Summer-blooming hydrangea, Paniculata
  • Osmanthus
  • Nandina
  • Privet/Ligustrum
  • Ornamental trees
  • Large shade trees

There may be a few more but this should get you started. Have fun!
